Record Increase in Difficulty Level With the latest adjustment at block height 937,440, Bitcoin mining difficulty has surged by 14.7%, reaching a new peak of 144.4 trillion.
This update, which took place on Friday, marks the largest absolute increase in the history of the Bitcoin network.
According to Mempool data, this rise fully compensates for the sharp 11% decline experienced in the previous period.
During the adjustment window, block production times averaged 8 minutes and 47 seconds—well below the protocol's 10-minute target—triggering the network's automatic upward revision of difficulty.
Hashrate Capacity Surpasses 1,000 EH/s The total computational power (hashrate) of the network rose from approximately 884 exahashes per second (EH/s) to 1,030 EH/s during the same period.
This absolute increase of roughly 18.5 trillion in difficulty units surpassed all previous adjustments recorded on the blockchain.
Mempool developer Mononaut highlighted the scale of the volatility, noting that the last two adjustments first saw difficulty drop by 15.8 trillion before rebounding with this 18.5 trillion increase.
Recovery Following the Winter Storm The primary driver behind this sharp increase is the return of miners who went offline during the severe winter storm that impacted the United States.
During the storm, approximately 200 EH/s of capacity was withdrawn from the network, with the Foundry USA pool notably experiencing a 60% drop in activity.
That temporary exodus had pushed block production times above 12 minutes, leading to the previous difficulty decrease.
Market experts suggest that the recent surge is a normalization process following the storm rather than a fundamental structural shift in the mining landscape.
