Annual Increase of 45% in Card Payments The Interbank Card Center (BKM) has released card payment data for January.
According to the figures, a total of 1.7 billion card payment transactions were carried out in Turkey last month.
The total value of these transactions reached 2 trillion 325.8 billion TL, representing a 45% increase compared to the same period last year.
Contactless and Online Payments on the Rise Contactless card usage continues to dominate in-store payments.
In January, four out of every five in-store payments were made using contactless methods.
The number of contactless transactions increased by 9% year-on-year to 1.12 billion, while the transaction value surged by 49% to reach 751.8 billion TL.
Meanwhile, card payments made over the internet rose by 42% to 687.4 billion TL, accounting for 30% of all card payments.
Total Number of Cards Reaches 465 Million The total number of cards in Turkey increased by 6% annually, reaching 464.9 million.
The distribution by card type is as follows: Credit cards: 143.4 million (10% increase) Debit cards: 210.9 million (8% increase) Prepaid cards: 110.6 million (2% decrease) Spending Amounts by Payment Method Credit cards accounted for the largest portion of the total payment volume in January, totaling 1 trillion 995.5 billion TL.
Debit cards were used for 322.8 billion TL in spending, while prepaid cards accounted for 7.5 billion TL.
In terms of value, credit card payments grew by 46%, and debit card payments increased by 55%.
Regarding transaction volume, credit cards contributed 1 billion transactions, followed by debit cards with 664.7 million and prepaid cards with 31.8 million.

According to Interbank Card Center (BKM) data, card payment volumes in Turkey rose 45% year-on-year in January to exceed 2.3 trillion TL, with contactless methods accounting for 80% of in-store transactions.
