Structural Transformation in the Tax System Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek shared significant data regarding changes in Turkey's tax structure during an event held for the 37th Tax Week.
Explaining that the share of indirect taxes within total tax revenues decreased from 66% to 62% under the current economic program, Şimşek stated that the ratio of tax expenditures to national income has also been reduced.
Minister Şimşek emphasized that efficiency has been increased by reviewing ineffective items within the system.
He conveyed a message that steps toward strengthening tax justice will continue with determination.
Increase in Taxpayers and Fight Against Informal Economy Stating that steps taken to combat the informal economy have yielded concrete results, Şimşek pointed to the increase in the number of tax declarations.
The Minister noted that the number of income tax declarations, which was 3.8 million in 2022, rose to over 5 million in 2024, with 473,000 taxpayers filing for the first time in 2025.
The total number of income tax payers has now surpassed the 6.2 million mark.
MTP Goals and the Era of Artificial Intelligence Touching upon the Medium-Term Program (MTP) targets, Şimşek expressed expectations for not only meeting the goals in 2026 and beyond but also demonstrating a stronger performance.
Highlighting the importance of digitalization in tax processes, the Minister announced that artificial intelligence will be deployed in all stages, from auditing to collection.
The aim is to strengthen tax justice and efficiency through the use of automation and advanced algorithms in the fight against informality.
