Gülcan Kış, a member of parliament for the CHP from Mersin, denounced the arrests and detentions of journalists that followed their social media posts, describing the actions as a restriction of freedom of thought and a danger to democracy.
She recalled that journalist Alican Uludağ had his home raided by 50 police officers in the early morning in front of his two children, stating that the raid was an attempt to create a climate of fear rather than to target individuals.
Kış highlighted the threats sent to MPs, CHP leader Özgür Özel, and other parliamentarians, noting that the number of threats directed at our leaders is limitless.
She accused the parliament and society of trying to silence dissent, saying that pressure policies continue, that a new minister does not change the mindset, and that labeling criticism as “defamation” turns it into a judicial stick.
Concluding that this is not a legal matter but a democracy crisis, Kış said the country will not stay silent and that the people will decide the response to this climate of fear in the ballot box.
