Hungary Blocks EU Sanctions and Ukraine Loan, Demands Oil Flow Normalization

Diplomatic Tension Between the EU and Hungary Hungary's move to block the 15th sanctions package against Russia and a planned €90 billion loan for Ukraine has sparked a significant crisis within the European Union.
This stance by the Budapest administration has led to intense debates among member states.
EU Commission Recalls Previous Consensus EU Commission Chief Spokesperson Paulo Pinho addressed the issue, recalling the consensus reached in December 2025 regarding the loan package for Ukraine.
Pinho stated that the conditions of the agreement, which allowed for the non-participation of three member states in financial contributions, have now been met and the process should be finalized.
Strong Reactions from Germany and Poland German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed surprise at Hungary's position, emphasizing that support for Ukraine must remain sustainable.
Wadephul noted that they would engage in necessary diplomatic efforts with Brussels to encourage Budapest to reconsider its stance.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski used stronger language, describing the Hungarian government's attitude as "shocking." Referring to Hungary's own history of foreign occupations, Sikorski criticized the ruling party for creating a hostile environment against a victim of aggression for domestic political gain.
Hungary’s Oil Condition Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto grounded the blockade in energy security concerns.
Szijjarto announced that Hungary would not approve the loan package for Ukraine until oil shipments via the Druzhba pipeline return to normal.
Additionally, the Budapest administration reiterated its refusal to support the new sanctions package targeting Russia.
