Ex Officio Investigation into Six Major Platforms In a statement released by the Board, the emphasis was placed on the best interests of the child.
The Board stated: "In order to ensure that children are protected from potential risks they may encounter in the digital environment regarding the protection of their personal data in social media use, and considering the best interests of the child, the Personal Data Protection Board has decided to initiate an ex officio investigation into the TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, and Discord platforms regarding how children's personal data is processed and what measures are taken." As part of this investigation, the data processing policies and data security standards of these popular platforms concerning child users will be audited in detail.
Following the investigation, the platforms' adequacy in protecting children's data and their compliance with current legislation will be evaluated.
