Representation Requirement for Digital Platforms: Property Rights Warning from Lawyer Gülşah Deniz Atalar

Representation Requirement in the Gaming Industry and Property Risks IT lawyer Gülşah Deniz Atalar has evaluated the government's preparations for new legal regulations targeting digital platforms.
Highlighting the planned requirement for gaming platforms to establish local representation in Turkey, Atalar noted that this mandate could threaten users' rights over their digital libraries.
Atalar emphasized that if platforms failing to open local offices are blocked from access, users would lose access to the games they have purchased.
This, she argued, would constitute a serious violation of property rights.
She also pointed out that age verification and identity verification are distinct concepts.
The legal expert stated that the removal of anonymity could leave individuals vulnerable to digital lynching attempts.
According to Atalar, making identity information mandatory could lead to the silencing of diverse voices in society, potentially placing pressure on the freedom of expression.
Observing similar legal processes in Europe, she warned that digital surveillance might be increased under the guise of child protection frameworks.
The lawyer added that legal regulations must be balanced to protect fundamental rights and freedoms; otherwise, user rights could be irreversibly damaged.
