Friedrich Merz Calls for Legal Restrictions on Children's Social Media Use

Addressing Disinformation and Manipulation Friedrich Merz, the chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has emphasized that deliberately spread fake news and online manipulation threaten the fabric of society.
He stated that binding regulations are necessary to address these challenges.
"Will We Allow Society to Be Undermined?" Highlighting the risks young people face in the digital world, Merz raised a critical question: "Will we stand by and watch our society be undermined from both within and without, and our youth and children be put at risk?" Merz's remarks have increased pressure on the German federal government, following similar restrictive measures recently introduced in Australia.
The Role of Federal States Due to Germany's federal structure, regulations regarding media and the internet fall under the jurisdiction of the state governments.
Consequently, any nationwide restriction would require the states to reach a common agreement.
Last year, the German government appointed a special commission tasked with protecting young people from harmful content on online platforms.
