River Flood Risk in Edirne: Red Alert Issued for Maritsa and Tundzha

Heavy rainfall and dam discharges from Bulgaria have pushed the Maritsa and Tundzha rivers to critical levels in Edirne, leading authorities to issue a red alert and close historical bridges.

River Flood Risk in Edirne: Red Alert Issued for Maritsa and Tundzha

River Flow Rates Reach Critical Levels Regional rainfall in Edirne and controlled water releases from dams in Bulgaria have pushed the flow rates of the Tundzha and Maritsa rivers to dangerous levels.
Due to the high water volume in the Maritsa River, the waters of the Tundzha River have begun to back up, causing water levels in the city center to rise rapidly.
Consequently, the historical Tundzha Bridge has been closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, while tourist facilities and agricultural lands in the area have been submerged.
Red Alert and Emergency Measures The latest measurements recorded the flow rate of the Maritsa River at 1,431 cubic meters per second.
Authorities have moved to a "red" alert level as the flow approaches the critical threshold of 2,200 cubic meters per second, which is the point where embankments may be breached.
While the embankments built to protect residential areas are currently preventing the water from spreading further, the risk remains high.
A crisis management center has been established under the leadership of Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer to manage potential disaster scenarios.
In line with the decisions made, numerous fire departments and search and rescue teams from neighboring provinces, including Yalova, Bursa, Tekirdağ, and Sakarya, have been dispatched to the region.
Teams remain on high alert at critical points throughout the city.
