This case, which also includes Google-owned YouTube as a defendant, is considered critical as it could set a precedent for thousands of similar filings.
Other platforms named in the litigation, such as TikTok and Snapchat, reached settlements under confidential terms before the trial proceedings began.
Internal Correspondence and Under-13 Policy During the hearing, plaintiff attorneys presented documents questioning Meta's policy regarding users under the age of 13.
An email sent by Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, suggested that the lack of adequate age verification made the company's defense more difficult.
Additionally, a 2018 presentation allegedly discussed strategies for keeping children under 13 on the platform.
Youth Safety and Future Strategies In response to these allegations, Zuckerberg stated that they are working on creating a supervised version for children under 13.
Citing the Messenger Kids app, which he uses with his own children, Zuckerberg expressed regret that they could not progress faster in identifying underage users in the past but maintained that they are now on the right track.
Thousands of similar lawsuits filed by families, prosecutors, and school districts against technology companies continue across the United States.
