New Era for Under-15s on Social Media: ID and Live Verification Requirements Coming

New Verification Standards A new regulation in Turkey aims to tighten the rules for social media access, particularly for children under the age of 15.
Under the proposed system, simply declaring an identification number will no longer be sufficient for opening an account.
Biometric Verification and Security The new system will require users to undergo biometric verification.
This process involves users performing specific facial movements in front of a camera to prove they are a real person and that their identity matches the provided ID documents.
This measure is designed to prevent children from bypassing age restrictions or creating accounts without parental consent.
Similar regulatory approaches are reportedly being considered or implemented in countries such as Canada, Venezuela, and various European nations.
VPN Challenges and Legal Framework While experts acknowledge that technical workarounds like VPNs could potentially be used to circumvent these restrictions, they emphasize that the regulation will promote the use of real identities in digital environments and facilitate better oversight.
The new measures are expected to strengthen the existing legal framework provided by Law No.
5651, which governs internet publications and combats crimes committed through such broadcasts.
