Background Germany, Europe's largest economy, is revisiting its tax regulations for the cryptocurrency market.
Currently, gains from crypto assets held for more than one year are exempt from taxation.
Legal Proposal The Finance Ministry, in a bill presented in July, proposes to abolish this exemption.
Under the proposal, profits from crypto sales would be taxed at 25% income tax, regardless of holding period.
Implementation Details If the new regulation takes effect, a 25% withholding tax will apply to all crypto sales from 1 January 2027 onward.
The law will not be retroactive; transactions from the previous year will continue to benefit from the existing exemption.
Future Plans Once approved by the parliament, the new tax obligation will apply to all crypto traders in Germany.
The ministry aims to enhance transparency and protect investors' rights.
Germany's Crypto Taxation Changes: Exemption Removed
