New Identity Verification System The Ministry of Justice has announced a new regulation aimed at clarifying criminal responsibility in digital spaces by requiring users to verify their real identity information.
The primary objective of this system is to ensure that social media users are held accountable for their online actions.
BTK Oversight and Implementation Following the enactment of the regulation, the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) will manage the technical infrastructure and auditing processes.
Users will be required to verify their identity to continue using social media platforms.
Through this method, the Ministry aims to prevent disinformation spread via fake or anonymous accounts, particularly those originating from abroad.
Account Closures and International Users A transition period is expected for the implementation of the new rules.
During this time, users who do not complete the identity verification process will have their accounts closed to access.
The regulation will apply to users within Turkey as well as citizens living abroad.
International users will be able to verify their identities using passport information or verification messages sent to their mobile phones.
Legal Oversight and Deterrence One of the most significant goals of the regulation is to bring actions known as anonymous attacks and cyberbullying under legal supervision.
By removing the veil of anonymity, the Ministry seeks to create a more transparent and legally accountable digital environment.
