Current Production and Future Goals The region currently produces 35,085 barrels of crude oil per day, accounting for approximately 28 percent of Turkey's total crude oil production.
In line with its vision for energy independence, the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) is increasing its investments in the area.
Following the 52 wells opened in 2025, the institution plans to significantly increase production capacity by opening 140 more new wells by the end of 2026.
Historical Context: From Raman-8 to Today The oil journey in the region began on January 17, 1946, when oil was reached at a depth of 1,361 meters on Raman Mountain.
The start of commercial production from the well named Raman-8 on March 8, 1948, was recorded as a turning point in Turkey's energy history.
This development changed the fate of Batman, which was a small village in 1937, leading to its rapid growth and attainment of provincial status in 1990.
The presence of institutions such as the TPAO Batman Regional Directorate and BOTAŞ has become the cornerstone of local development and employment.
Reserve Quality and Processing Mehmet Tahir Ergin, TPAO Batman Regional Production Manager, stated that the reserves in the region have different gravities.
Noting that the amount of reserves in the West Raman field is quite high, Ergin emphasized that the oil here has a lower gravity compared to the Şırnak fields.
The extracted crude oil is purified from foreign substances in modern facilities before being sent to refineries for further processing.
