TÜRMOB President Yıldız Issues Critical IBAN Warning: "Do Not Let Others Use Your Account"

IBANs are Personal and Monitored İrfan Hüseyin Yıldız, President of the Union of Chambers of Certified Public Accountants and Sworn-in Certified Public Accountants of Turkey (TÜRMOB), has drawn attention to the strictly individual nature of IBAN numbers used in money transfers.
Emphasizing that bank accounts are opened within the framework of BDDK (Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency), MASAK (Financial Crimes Investigation Board), and tax legislation, Yıldız reminded that every account movement is legally attributed to the account holder.
He stressed that individuals are responsible for all transactions conducted through their accounts.
Risk of Severe Financial and Criminal Sanctions Stating that allowing others to use one's IBAN can lead to serious legal consequences, Yıldız noted that the concept of "IBAN victims" arises when individuals unknowingly allow their accounts to be used for criminal transactions.
He warned that such negligence could be linked to serious crimes such as aiding terrorist organizations, money laundering, and participation in tax evasion.
Furthermore, Yıldız pointed out that this situation could bring heavy financial obligations, including tax loss penalties and irregularity fines, which the account holder would be liable to pay.
Precautions for Safe Money Transfers To avoid becoming a victim of such schemes, Yıldız stated that citizens must request invoices for all goods or services purchased and offered the following recommendations: Ensure that the party receiving the payment and the person or institution issuing the invoice are the same entity.
Avoid making money transfers to parties with whom there is no established commercial relationship.
During transfer transactions, clearly and detailedly state the purpose of the payment in the description section of the receipt.
Yıldız emphasized that following these measures is essential to protect individuals from both financial liabilities and potential criminal prosecution.
