Under the new regulations, technology platforms will be required to remove non-consensually shared intimate images within 48 hours.
The government is keeping the most severe sanctions on the table, including the possibility of completely blocking platforms that persistently refuse to comply with the rules.
Single Notification for Multi-Platform Cleanup The regulation aims to eliminate the bureaucratic hurdles faced by victims.
In the new system, a victim will only need to report an image once for it to be removed.
This single notification will trigger the simultaneous removal of the content across multiple platforms.
Furthermore, AI-powered systems will be utilized to automatically block any attempts to re-upload the material.
Internet service providers will also be provided with technical guidance on how to restrict access to illegal websites that host such content.
A Front Line Against Digital Violence UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the online world as the "front line of the fight against violence against women and girls in the 21st century." Starmer noted that urgent measures are being taken, particularly against AI-based "nudification" tools and malicious chatbots.
Science, Innovation, and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized that the internet must be a safe space for women, stating that no woman should have to wait days for a photo to be deleted across various platforms.
