The European Commission has issued a sharp response to new US tariff proposals, urging Washington to honor the trade agreement established last year.

European Commission Warns US on Tariffs: "A Deal is a Deal"

European Commission Calls for Transparency The European Commission has issued a critical call to Washington following the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn global tariffs previously introduced by the Donald Trump administration.
Immediately following the court's ruling, President Trump announced a temporary 10% customs duty on all products, which was shortly thereafter increased to 15%.
In response to these developments, the European Commission, which manages trade policy for the 27 EU member states, emphasized the need for full transparency regarding the steps the United States intends to take.
The Commission reminded Washington that the trade agreement signed last year aimed for a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial transatlantic trade environment.
"A Deal is a Deal" Stating that the current tax increases do not serve these objectives, the Commission sent a firm message to the Washington administration, declaring that "a deal is a deal." This statement marks a significant hardening of the diplomatic tone compared to Brussels' initial, more cautious assessment following the court ruling.
Trade Uncertainty and Exemptions The agreement reached last year stipulated a 15% customs duty for the majority of EU-originated goods, with certain sectors like steel excluded.
Strategic products, such as aircraft and spare parts, were assigned a zero percent tax rate.
It remains unclear whether the new 15% tariffs announced by Trump will replace the existing agreement or be applied as additional taxes.
If the new duties replace the agreement, the zero-tariff exemptions held by the EU could be eliminated, potentially pushing transatlantic trade into a period of serious uncertainty.
