AK Party MP Abdurrahim Fırat Reacts to 'Ramadan Event' Criticisms: "An Islamophobic Approach"

Islamophobia and the Secularism Debate AK Party Erzurum MP Abdurrahim Fırat has reacted to criticisms claiming that events organized within the scope of the month of Ramadan violate the principle of secularism.
Fırat stated that these allegations are baseless and target Turkey's cultural and religious values.
Arguing that the debates carried out under the pretext of protecting secularism actually constitute an Islamophobic attack, Fırat noted that such approaches damage social peace.
He emphasized that the presence of religious values in the public sphere is a right and that attacks on these values are unacceptable.
"The Principle of Secularism is Being Distorted" Emphasizing that the events are based entirely on volunteerism, Fırat opposed the interpretation of secularism in line with ideological interests.
He provided the following assessment on the matter: "The attitude of a minority that distorts secularism—a legal principle that guarantees the citizen's freedom of religion and conscience—and interprets it according to their own ideological approaches is unacceptable." Fırat added that attempts to exclude Islamic sensitivities from the public sphere are incompatible with democratic rights and do not contribute to social peace.
Call for Unity and Solidarity MP Fırat stated that segments of society alienated from religious values should show respect for the beliefs of the community.
Emphasizing the need to act in accordance with the spirit of Ramadan, Fırat concluded his statement with these words: "Instead of developing hostile attitudes toward the national and spiritual values of this country, let us all experience the spirit of unity, solidarity, and brotherhood of Ramadan together."
