Accountability and Identity Verification Justice Minister Akın Gürlek has announced a new regulation requiring mandatory identity verification for social media users.
Emphasizing that the primary goal of the regulation is to ensure account owners take responsibility for their actions, Gürlek stated, "Those acting as keyboard warriors will now have to do so with their real identities." Under the new system, users will be required to link their existing accounts with their official identity information.
This move aims to curb anonymity-driven misconduct on digital platforms.
Closure of Fake Accounts Minister Gürlek explained that a specific transition period is planned for the implementation.
During this timeframe, all fake accounts that fail to complete the identity verification process will be blocked from access.
The regulation will apply not only to users within the country but also to citizens residing abroad.
For users living outside the country, verification can be completed using passport information, ensuring the system covers the entire user base regardless of location.
Two-Step Security Measures To enhance the security of the system, Gürlek noted that additional measures would be taken.
In addition to identity details, a security layer will be strengthened with verification codes sent to mobile phones.
This dual-layered approach is intended to maximize account security and prevent unauthorized access.
